About the workshop

The way we communicate shapes the way we work together.

A clear message can align a team. A thoughtful question can rebuild trust. This workshop uses the Shannon–Weaver model and the Johari Window as practical frameworks for clearer conversations, self-awareness and leadership at work.

Explore the foundations

Small shifts.
Better conversations.

Try two ideas we bring into the workshop.

The message journey

What you send.
What they receive.

Change the channel conditions to explore how a message can become harder to receive.

01SenderIntention → words
02ChannelConversation + distractions
03ReceiverWords → interpretation
MESSAGE SENT

“Please send the client brief by 3 pm today.”

MESSAGE RECEIVED

“Please send the … brief by … today.”

Find a quieter moment and choose a channel that suits the message.

Illustrative workplace adaptation. Shannon’s original model concerns signal transmission; the check-back step is an added interpersonal practice.

The foundations behind these activities

Shannon’s 1948 paper describes a communication system and the effect of noise. We adapt the pathway for workplace discussion, rather than presenting it as a complete theory of interpersonal relationships. Read the original paper ↗

Ramani and colleagues (2017) explored the Johari Window as a framework for self-awareness and feedback in medical training. This qualitative study informs our discussion of feedback; it does not establish a guaranteed effect for corporate workshops. Read the study ↗

What you'll master

Everything your team needs to communicate with impact

01
Message Clarity & Noise
Use a workplace adaptation of Shannon–Weaver to examine the sender, message, channel and receiver, and spot what gets in the way.
02
Self-Awareness & Trust
Explore the Johari Window: what you and others know, what stays hidden and what feedback can help you notice.
03
Listening & Constructive Feedback
Listen to understand, describe specific behaviours and check your interpretation before agreeing the next step.
04
Leadership Conversations
Practise clear delegation, respectful disagreement and feedback that supports accountability while protecting working relationships.

How it works

From awareness to everyday action

1
Experience a Communication Challenge
Work through a familiar meeting, handover or difficult conversation with your team.
2
Map the Message & the Noise
Use Shannon–Weaver as a starting point to discuss how wording, channel and distractions affect a message. Then practise checking understanding.
3
Open the Johari Window
Invite specific feedback and share relevant work preferences. Practise respectful reflection without pressure to disclose private information.
4
Practise a Leadership Conversation
Apply the learning to delegation, feedback or conflict. Choose a communication habit to practise back at work.

Start a better conversation. Build a stronger team.
